Falls are common among older adults and often lead to loss of independence or even death. More than one-third of individuals 65 and older fall each year, with 10% of those falls resulting in serious injury. More people 65 and older are hospitalized as a result of falling than any other type of injury. Most falls are associated with one or more risk factors (e.g., muscle weakness, gait and balance problems, vision, medications and environmental hazards). Research has shown that attention to these risk factors can significantly reduce fall rates. Minnesota Falls Prevention Initiative (MNFPI) is a statewide initiative promoting independence and quality of life among older adults by reducing falls and fall-related injuries. The MNFPI has funds available for community-based organizations to address falls among older adults and keep Minnesotans right side up. Up to 10 applicants within Minnesota will be awarded $1,000 or $2,000 to address either of the following two categories: Fall Prevention Partnership Development or Fall Prevention Community Activity projects. In remarks during today's "Falls Prevention Briefing" in Washington, DC, APTA member and National Falls Free Coalition representative Bonita Lynn Beattie, PT, MPT, MHA, said that "falls and falls-related injuries are not normal consequences of growing old; there are evidence-based interventions that can help reduce older adults' risk of falling and can affect the rate of falls and falls-related injuries and death." Beattie, who also represents the National Council on Aging (NCOA), urged Congress "to fund efforts to increase the falls risk assessment and intervention skills of health care providers and promote collaboration with the aging services network." To read the complete copy of Beattie's remarks, click here. "We applaud Ms Beattie and urge Congress to fund this critical health issue," commented APTA President R Scott Ward, PT, PhD. "Falls are a leading cause of injury and death among people 65 and older. About one in three seniors above age 65, and nearly one in two seniors over age 80, will fall at least once this year, many times with disastrous consequences. Physical therapists are taking an active role in educating consumers about how to safely prevent falls as well as treat those who have fallen and suffered injuries as a result. This education will ultimately improve the health and quality of life of our nation's seniors." The Safety of Seniors Act, signed into law two weeks ago, authorizes the secretary of Health and Human Services to oversee and support a national education campaign focusing on reducing falls among older adults and preventing repeat falls, and awards grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements to design and carry out local education campaigns. The American Physical Therapy Association (www.apta.org), a member of the Falls Free Coalition, is a national organization representing physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students nationwide. Its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapist education, practice, and research. Consumers can visit www.findapt.us to find a physical therapist in their area, as well as www.apta.org/consumer for physical therapy news and information. ======================== The Minnesota Falls Prevention Listserv is a vehicle for sharing information related to the Minnesota Falls Prevention Initiative, led by the MN Board on Aging in partnership with the MN Department of Human Services, MN Department of Health and numerous public and private organizations. It provides information on Aging Research translated into normal language (ART) by and from Cornell University. I thought you might like to know about this resource. See the link below. Kristine Gjerde Physical Therapist Consultant 651-334-5622 We are pleased to announce the availability of the Aging Research Translator ( http://www.agingresearchtranslator.com/blog.php?), created by the Cornell Institute for Translational Research on Aging. The Aging Research Translator (ART) website has been designed with community-based practitioners in mind, by offering non- technical summaries of aging research published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Community-based practitioners are the largest group of potential users of aging-related research, and the people most likely to apply the aging knowledge-base to the lives of real people. However, the location of research in university libraries and databases makes it difficult to access. Furthermore, the overly technical language of research articles can be an impediment. The ART website, developed by Cornell University researchers, attempts to address these challenges by posting summaries of aging research literature using non-technical language. ART is a blog where we post new aging research summaries every other week. Summaries are posted chronologically and can also be viewed according to topical categories. Readers are invited to write comments after each post (all comments need to be approved by the blog administrator before being listed). Please join us on the ART! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
