The results were maintained whether exercising in a supervised group or independently. Interventions that followed assessment with referrals for treatment to reduce risk of falling were effective in some studies and ineffective in others. Overall, these multifactor interventions did reduce rates of falls. Home safety interventions only reduced falls for people who were at high risk or had severely impaired vision. There was evidence from single trials that falls are reduced by some other interventions: gradual withdrawal from some types of drugs taken to improve sleep, treatments to reduce anxiety and or depression; cataract surgery on the first affected eye, and anti-slip shoes for icy conditions. Vitamin D showed potential for reducing the risk of falls only in those with vitamin D deficiencies. In a study of 632 people, ages 75 to 81, half of the individuals in the study received individually tailored physical activity counseling from a trained physiotherapist, which was supplemented by telephone consultations over a two-year period. The individuals who participated in counseling were significantly more likely to increase their physical activity, which in turn decreased their mobility problems. According to a presentation at this year's Digestive Disease Week 2009, even short-term use of popular acid-reducing heartburn drugs may raise the risk of hip fractures. The increased risks appeared two years after patients started taking proton pump inhibitors such as Prevacid and histamine-2 receptor antagonists, or H2RAs, such as Zantac and Tagamet. Other proton pump inhibitors include popular brands such as Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, and Aciphex.
