The goal of this initiative - "Communities Putting Prevention to Work" - is to reduce risk factors, prevent/delay chronic disease, promote wellness in children and adults, and provide positive, sustainable health change in communities. "Communities Putting Prevention to Work" will address the leading preventable causes of death and disability, namely obesity and tobacco use, by expanding the use of evidence-based strategies and programs, mobilizing local resources at the community-level, and strengthening the capacity of states. As a result of these efforts, powerful models of success are expected to emerge that can be replicated in other states and communities. The cornerstone of the initiative is the Community Program ($373 million), with cooperative agreements to be awarded to communities through a competitive selection process. Methods: Twenty-three older adults were randomly assigned to either an experimental group that participated in a 12- week small-group based balance program or a control group. Results: A repeated measures ANOVA revealed that there was a significant interaction between groups over time in the Berg Balance Scale scores. The experimental group improved over time, whereas the control group decreased in performance. The mean number of falls was significantly less in the experimental group during the intervention compared with the control group. Conclusions: A community-based multifactorial intervention including individualized fall risk assessment, exercise, and home assessment appears to safely and effectively reduce the number of falls, resulting in significant improvements in functional balance ability and decreased fall risk. Falls are the most common cause of fatal injuries among elderly adults age 65 years and older, as well as the most common cause of nonfatal injuries in this population. The direct medical cost for fall-related injuries among the elderly is about $20 billion annually and is expected to increase substantially over the next decade as the population ages. Often, common fall-related injuries, such as fractures, open wounds, or head traumas, are serious enough to result in emergency department (ED) treatment. These injuries can impair mobility and may require admission to a long-term care (LTC) facility for a year or more. Because many falls are preventable and their impact on the U.S. health care system is significant, it is important to better understand the types of fall-related injuries experienced by elderly adults, particularly those injuries requiring treatment in an ED. While many communities across the state are currently engaged in such initiatives, the objective of a state recognition program would be to promote even greater adoption of CFL ideas. MBA will use the results of this survey to inform a Report to the Legislature on options for Minnesota to adopt a Communities for a Lifetime (CFL) recognition program. MBA would like to receive survey submissions from a large and diverse pool of respondents. MBA invites people to forward this survey announcement broadly to colleagues and citizens to help achieve this goal. The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey will close on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2009.
